Through our work over the years, it became evident that, despite the best efforts of parents, children can suffer from a loss of self-esteem, feelings of bereavement and loss. These feelings can manifest themselves in challenging and difficult behaviour, poor school performance and emotional difficulties. A confidential therapeutic programme through the medium of art, drama and play therapy is available through funding from the Family Support Agency. The aim of the programme is to assist children and parents to develop constructive and loving relationships in the context of their changed situation.
Art & drama therapists provide therapy for children aged from 4 to 12 two afternoons per week – Wednesdays and Thursdays for 40 weeks of the year. Referrals are accepted from parents or guardians who are already involved in the various activities in the Centre and who are willing to participate in a parenting support group as our holistic approach involves working with the child and parent at the same time.
Children and parents are seen on a first come first served basis. Parents with children in the Crèche who feel a child in their family may need therapy will, in the first instance, be referred to the Information and Support Workers.
Rainbows: Here at Doras Bui, there are several qualified Rainbows facilitators and coordinators who will enable us to run The Rainbow’s programme here in our centre. Rainbow’s is a free, voluntary service for children and young people experiencing loss following bereavement and parental separation. The programme provides children with an opportunity to meet with other children of a similar age and loss experience, Rainbows can Support a child to engage with their own individual grief– to identify, name, understand, express, and share their feelings in a safe setting.
